Parameterized Intractability of Even Set and Shortest Vector Problem from Gap-ETH

چکیده
The k-Even Set problem is a parameterized variant of theMinimum Distance Problem of linear codes over F2, which can be stated as follows: given a generator matrix A and an integer k, determine whether the code generated by A has distance at most k. Here, k is the parameter of the problem. The question of whether k-Even Set is fixed parameter tractable (FPT) has been repeatedly raised in literature and has earned its place in Downey and Fellows’ book (2013) as one of the “most infamous” open problems in the field of Parameterized Complexity. In this work, we show that k-Even Set does not admit FPT algorithms under the (randomized) Gap Exponential Time Hypothesis (Gap-ETH) [Dinur’16, Manurangsi-Raghavendra’16]. In fact, our result rules out not only exact FPT algorithms, but also any constant factor FPT approximation algorithms for the problem. Furthermore, our result holds even under the following weaker assumption, which is also known as the Parameterized Inapproximability Hypothesis (PIH) [Lokshtanov et al.’17]: no (randomized) FPT algorithm can distinguish a satisfiable 2CSP instance from one which is only 0.99-satisfiable (where the parameter is the number of variables). We also consider the parameterized k-Shortest Vector Problem (SVP), in which we are given a lattice whose basis vectors are integral and an integer k, and the goal is to determine whether the norm of the shortest vector (in the lp norm for some fixed p) is at most k. Similar to k-Even Set, this problem is also a long-standing open problem in the field of ParameterizedComplexity. We show that, for any p > 1, k-SVP is hard to approximate (in FPT time) to some constant factor, assuming PIH. Furthermore, for the case of p = 2, the inapproximability factor can be amplified to any constant.

(Gap/S)ETH Hardness of SVP
We prove the following quantitative hardness results for the Shortest Vector Problem in the `p norm (SVPp), where n is the rank of the input lattice. 1. For “almost all” p > p0 ≈ 2.1397, there no 2p -time algorithm for SVPp for some explicit constant Cp > 0 unless the (randomized) Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH) is false. 2. For any p > 2, there is no 2-time algorithm for SVPp unless ...
متن کاملStructural Parameters, Tight Bounds, and Approximation for (k, r)-Center
In (k, r)-Center we are given a (possibly edge-weighted) graph and are asked to select at most k vertices (centers), so that all other vertices are at distance at most r from a center. In this paper we provide a number of tight fine-grained bounds on the complexity of this problem with respect to various standard graph parameters. Specifically: • For any r ≥ 1, we show an algorithm that solves ...
متن کاملHardness of r-dominating set on Graphs of Diameter (r + 1)
The dominating set problem has been extensively studied in the realm of parameterized complexity. It is one of the most common sources of reductions while proving the parameterized intractability of problems. In this paper, we look at dominating set and its generalization r-dominating set on graphs of bounded diameter in the realm of parameterized complexity. We show that Dominating set remains...
متن کاملThe Parameterized Complexity of Some Fundamental Problems of Linear Codes and Integer Lattices
The parameterized complexity of a number of fundamental problems of linear codes and integer lattices is explored. Concerning codes, the main results are that Maximum Likelihood Decoding and Weight Distribution are hard for W 1] and NP by parametric polynomial-time transformations from the Perfect Code problem in graphs. Concerning lattices, we prove a similar result for the Theta Series proble...
متن کاملParameterized Complexity of the List Coloring Reconfiguration Problem with Graph Parameters
Let G be a graph such that each vertex has its list of available colors, and assume that each list is a subset of the common set consisting of k colors. For two given list colorings of G, we study the problem of transforming one into the other by changing only one vertex color assignment at a time, while at all times maintaining a list coloring. This problem is known to be PSPACE-complete even ...
